Family Counselling Centre The concept of Family Counselling was developed by Central Social Welfare Board in the country in the 1980s when there was a spate of dowry – related murders, the Board spearheaded the camping against this crime and started the programme of Voluntary Action Bureaus’(VAB) which subsequently took the shape of Family Counselling Centre (FCC). The objectives of Family Counselling Centre is to provide preventive and rehabilitation services to women and families that are victims of atrocities and family maladjustment. The Family Counselling has served a vital function in mending family relations through crisis intervention and systematic counseling. Socio Educational Welfare Association is running a Family Counseling Centre which was started from 1st March 2007 under the cooperation of Central Social Welfare Board, The counseling centre is working on the wrong done to human beings by domestic violence and abuse. Domestic violence occurs when a family member, partner or ex-partner attempts to physically or psychologically dominate another. It occurs in all cultures, among people of all races, ethnicities, religions, sexes and classes’. Both men and women perpetrate domestic violence. Domestic violence has many forms, which includes physical violence, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, intimidation, economic deprivation and threats of violence. Violence may be of different types like criminal and includes physical assault (hitting, pushing, shoving, etc), sexual abuse (unwanted or forced sexual activity) and stalking. To overcome such problems family counseling helps a lot. Family counseling is a type of psychotherapy. It may have various objectives. Family counseling helps to improve, to promote better relationships and understanding within a family. Alternately family counseling may address the needs of the family when one family member suffers from a mental or physical illness that alters his/her behavior in negative ways. If any member of a family is associated with heavy alcohol consumption, drug addiction or any other factor this may leads to domestic violence and might actually be the reason why other family members seek out family counseling. This therapist also often helps the family to reflect on the better way of communication and encouragement with each other. Family counseling may not take a long time to complete may be benefited from four or five session, sometimes family may require more help and might require 20-30 sessions to resolve significant or ongoing family issues. Through family counseling one does not get instant results.
